The Pastor's Pen

October 2016 Pastor's Pen

The Pastor’s Pen October 2016 “And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. ” Luke 14: 27

Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem and a cross, but the crowd thinks that he is on his way to Jerusalem and a crown. They consider Jesus a "winner," and follow him so that they too might win. Jesus teaches them that discipleship carries a high price tag. Those who aspire to follow him need to count the cost before signing on the dotted line.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Many things we think we know, we don't really know. Many things that we're convinced are true, simply aren't true. It takes only a little bit of research to learn the truth, but often it's just easier to hang on to misinformation. For example, did you know...

The New Math

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

"Houston, we have a problem!"

“You do not want to leave too, do you?”Jesus asked the Twelve.  Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”      John: 67-68

Rising Above the Challenge

“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”    Philippians 4:13

A word here, a cup of cold water there…

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which indeed is smaller than all seeds.  But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.  "The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until it was all leavened."  Matthew 13:31-33

Happy Birthday!

June 8th is Pentecost Sunday— the church's birthday!  We should have balloons and streamers. We should have birthday cake and noise-makers.  We should celebrate, because today is the birthday of the church — not the birthday of just this congregation, but the birthday of the church of Jesus Christ — the whole thing!

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go..." Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." Luke 9:62
